Chapter 17

Nord

The fire had long since burned to embers, and the moon given way to the sun. His wife laid on her side, cradled by his body, her head pillowed by his arm. She looked like an angel lying there, her golden hair spilling between them, cheeks flushed with sleep, and lips softly parted. He couldn’t think of a more beautiful vision to wake up to.

Their appetites for each other the night before had been insatiable, lasting many rounds in the forest and culminating in one memorable chase. While they hadn’t managed to fell a tree, their vigorous lovemaking had startled a cougar who’d taken one look at them and wisely went off in search of new hunting grounds.

They never made it to a bed. Though sometime in the early morning, they did finally stumble back into the private suite of rooms Astrid had arranged for them. The candles and fireplace must have been spelled because they’d flickered to life as soon as the bride and groom crossed the threshold, illuminating the fur rug covered in rose petals and the two horns of matrimonial mead they’d yet to consume, along with various other refreshments.

Lina had taken one look at the romantic setup and pounced on him, thus continuing the voracious cycle for several hours more.

Despite all of it, his cock still stirred to life at the sight of her snuggled beside him.

“You can’t be serious,” she murmured sleepily.

Nord trailed his fingers down her side and over the rise of her hip. “About loving you? Deadly.”

She chuckled, her laughter puffing over his inner arm. “If by that you mean you’re seeking to kill me through an overdose of pleasure, you may just get your wish. Especially if you attempt what I think you’re going to attempt.”

He pressed a kiss to the back of her neck. “Do not think to escape me so easily, wife. Die if you must, but I will simply follow you into the next life and then set about doing it all over again.”

“Mmm,” she murmured. “Sounds like heaven to me.”

Nord grinned, his fingers sliding down her hip to settle between her legs. Initial protest aside, Lina’s thighs fell open immediately, welcoming his touch. As his fingers parted her slick folds, he found her more than ready for him. Lina shifted in his grasp, tilting her head back so her lips could meet his.

Before they got any further, a loud knock sounded at the door.

He growled as Lina pulled away. “Where do you think you’re going?”

“Someone’s at the door.”

“So?”

“You did tell everybody they were allowed to bother us again once the sun was up.” She gestured to the window. “At least whoever it is listened.”

“I’ve waited centuries for you. It’s my wedding night until I decide otherwise. Whoever it is can fuck off.”

“I heard that,” came Finley’s voice.

Nord grabbed the first thing within reach—which ended up being a fire poker—and flung it at the door, where it sank into the wood and vibrated with a resounding thrum. “You of all people should know better.
